Summer Bridge Improves Students’ School Readiness
School readiness is not just ABC’s and 123’s; it’s the ability to listen and speak, to ask and to answer. It means that children can use “school tools” like pencils, crayons and scissors. Most important may be the ability to interact with a teacher, get along with peers, and participate in the classroom environment. And the experts agree: investment in early childhood education is vital to success in school, with effects well into middle age. In FY 2011-12, First 5 Marin provided free kindergarten preparation programs, focusing on a breadth of skills and abilities, for more than 200 students. Assessments of children attending Summer Bridge and Kinder Academy classes indicate that significant gains were made in overall child development—in cognitive abilities as well as the critical “soft skills” like self-control, focus and sociability.
